Start the summer with ENERGY STAR LEDs

As summer approaches, Otter Tail Power Co. reminds consumers to review their habits and make earth-friendly changes. An easy change to make is switching incandescent lightbulbs to light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs).

“LEDs use 75% less energy and last approximately 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs. While LEDs may cost more up front, you’ll see energy savings over the long term,” said Brenda Sandahl, Otter Tail Power Co. senior market planning specialist.

ENERGY STAR certification ensures quality. Here are 10 reasons consumers should look for the ENERGY STAR label:

  1. Independent, third-party certification.
  2. Verified compliance with over 20 industry standards and procedures, set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
  3. Ongoing random, off-the-shelf testing to ensure product quality.
  4. Light levels consistent with traditional incandescent bulbs.
  5. Exceptional color variety and quality.
  6. Long life. All ENERGY STAR bulbs have a minimum three-year warranty and tests prove at least a 20-year life.
  7. Dimmability, for use in a variety of applications.
  8. All-direction light delivery.
  9. The ability to fit a variety of fixtures.
  10. Average energy savings of about $75 per bulb over its lifespan.

ENERGY STAR LEDs also deliver full brightness instantly, have constant light output for at least 35,000 hours, and won’t flicker when dimmed. Plus, ENERGY STAR LEDs help drive lower cooling costs because they produce almost no heat.
