Light bulbs to change in 2012

CFL Light bulbMany standard incandescent light bulbs will become a thing of the past after Jan. 1, 2012, when the Energy Independence and Security Act becomes effective. The federal act is aimed at improving energy efficiency in light bulbs.  The first bulbs to transition out are 100-watt incandescent bulbs.  Other 45- to 100-watt incandescent bulbs will become unavailable through 2014.

Compact florescent lights are one option to replace incandescent bulbs. CFLs use two-thirds less energy and last 10 times as long, while emitting the same amount of light.

In addition to CFLs, other new types of light bulbs are being produced to meet the standards of the act.  Light emitting diode and energy-efficient halogen lights are becoming more readily available.
